I read here that I should use orange high temperature RTV compound when installing pipes. I don't see any "orange" product in stores or on the Permatex website. How about Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker? That seems to have the highest temperature rating.

You probably already know this, but it took me many miles and finally a very bright back light source to discover my stock pipes leak the least with the clamps at the rear of the pipe slots.

Yep, I have mine clamped about 3 pubimeters from the end.

btw, I use the red/orange RTV. Bought it at Pep Boys many moons ago. Surprised it is still viable.

The permatex super copper is the kind they mean (other manufacturese too but thats the stuff) stuff is bullet proof I have used it on exhaust manifole to head connections and the header on my BMW cracked right at the head and I plugged it with that to ride until I could fix it.

the stuff Phil says is probably the same stuff too. Its orange or red in color. The color isn't the important part the important part the temp it will withstand is.

I didn't already know. Thanks for the tip. I did search the site a lot, and now I guess I'm prepared to do the job. Silencer mounting plate to frame 30Nm, silencer clamp 22 Nm. I'm replacing too loud TOR longs. I'm trying stock pipes with rear baffles removed–just the rear ones, for starters. My dealer says the mains (125 with a shim) should be OK. All I want is a good sound that's not so loud

Check Dinques site he has a jet calculator that works. No guessing. just download it and type in your configuration and altitude and it tells you what jets you need. It really woirk I have tested it on several bikes now and I know of several people on this site who have used it as well. You will find that and other useful info here.

PatsJettingCalculator won't open. Maybe because I'm on an Apple?

Yep, it's a Windows executable. Isn't there something for the Mac that can run Windows stuff?

Bootcamp or Parallels (plus a copy of Windows) but only for the newer Intel Macs. Don't know if the view is worth the climb.

I use Macs - I have an Intel and a G5. I don't really want to put Windows on my computer. I do wish there was a different version of Pat's calculator. I can translate any Microsoft stuff but can't run or use exe. files. It's rare I need to deal with them and it's certainly not worth having Windows for.

well if you want to tell me your set up and altitude I'll be glad to run it and tell you what it says,as I am sure anyone else on here would too.

Well, thanks. If somebody wants to do that, that would be great. My 2003 BA now has TOR longs, factory carbs jetted at 125 with one shim, AI removed. I live 1169 feet above sea level.

Because the TOR's are too loud for me, I'm about to replace them with stock pipes with rear baffles removed. I wonder what the jets should be with those.

And if those turn out to be too quiet, I might drill or pull out the next baffles, so I wonder what the jets should be for that setup, too.

I talked to my dealer about this, and he said they use 125's with one shim for all aftermarket pipes.

OK here is what I have with what you gave me.
If your set up is any different it should be redone.
TOR pipes not altered ,stock air box with stock paper filter , snorkel in ,1169 feet above sea level, stock needles , 42 pilots jets, needles not shimmed...main 123.5
same set up with stock pipes 1 baffle out no shim ...121.5
stock pipes 1 bafflke out with 1 shim .....119.5
stock pipes 2 baffles out no shim.....123.5
stock pipes 2 baffles out 1 shim....121.5

Thanks, Dog. When I make the final pipe decision I'll fix the jets.
