You will need an oven too. I considered doing this for awhile myself, then a guy opened a shop about 6 miles from my house. A buddy of mine had some factory chrome HD pieces done there and the price was really reasonable. They prepped the chrome and coated them black. He was happy with the cost and the quality..... For some good info on what's available, and maybe some how-to stuff, check out Eastwood .

Do you remember what the prep for chrome was?

We were wondering about that at work but never did find out for sure. I would imagine they had to scuff it up first. I doubt if they removed it. Probably media-blasted it. I don't remember the prices, but I know they couldn't have stripped the chrome AND powder coated for what they charged.

There's GOT to be some platers/coaters around here. Custom shops are a dime a dozen around here, between bikes and the jacked up Jeeps and Hummers. I'll have to take a look. Personally, I would LOVE to have a sand blaster, and a powder coater! I think someone did a home kit a while back and used a toaster oven. How hot does it need to get?

I'm no expert - I've read a bit about it is all. For some reason 300 degrees or so comes to mind. Check that Eastwood link above.. they had lots of info last time I looked.

It has been a while back, but I've done some small parts in an old electric oven . Pep Boy's used to sell a kit (sans oven). Two things- 1) it ruins the oven (smell) and 2) powdercoating is best done with the part hanging in the air. I never could get away from either a line from the rack or uneven applications from doing parts one side at a time, or screwing up the electrostatic charge. the pwders are a dry type that are "attracted" to the part to be coated. The powders we used were baked on at 275 deg F. The trick, of course, is prep work and getting a good even application of the powder/ electrostatic charge. It's not hard, but is an art/skill/craft.
2002 Bandit 1200/ GSXR cams/ 1277 BB Kit/ Holeshot header and can/ 38mm flatslides/ a good head/lotsa hp/lotsa tq- lots of rear tires...

Good to know! I think I'll try to find a local guy and just bring a pile of small parts to him at once and see...
I also saw a thing about removing rust using water and baking soda or something with an electric charge.

I saw an advertisement for Ramp Cycles on Ebay offering ceramic coating services. I'm guessing they use a local shop out near them. Figure if they're doing ceramic coat, they can also do normal powder coating as well. Tricky thing is finding out who they use so you can go straight to the coater instead of paying for Ramp's markup on top of it.

Thanks for the input! RAMP is the only dealer I have heard of ever in the history of ever to NEVER discount any bikes. Even two year old SMs on the floor are still market at 8 grand... So I imagine they do get top dollar for that stuff.
