How difficult is it to remove a speedmaster gas tank? I have a quick chance to get in and have it painted today...anything I should know?

very easy remove the seat and one bolt (12 mm)holds it (the tank) on...remove the dash panel...unplug gas line..and pull vent hose off from under tank...(you'll find it when you lift the tank...
Lift the tank up from the rear and pull away from the bars toward the rear ...
be careful not to pinch that vent line when you replace the tank..

-make sure petcock is off
-removes fuel line from petcock (catch gas drips)
-remove three fixings holding dash to tank
-unplug dash
-remove seat
-remove single bolt holding tank to frame
-lift tank off, making sure to remove breather hose
Good luck!

Just remove the seat, the one bolt holding the tank, the three machine screws holding the console and the fuel line (don't forget to turn the petcock to OFF). Lift the rear of the tank and pull it out. The vent line under the tank will fall off as you pull the tank out. I've done it at least 100 times while messing with everything else on the bike.

Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Beware of belt buckles.
When you set the tank down, put a block of wood under it so it isn't sitting on the petcock.

If there's fuel in the tank, it can slosh out of the vent hole fairly easily. Keep the tank tipped toward the back a-littul while in motion
While moving the tank around, I often enjoy sprinkling down my clothes and shoes with mid grade. The stench of gas seems to add that certain je ne sais quoi to my groove.

Somebody tell me where that vent hose is supposed to be. I've just realized that mine hasn't been there since day one. I've never had a vent hose hanging down from the tank when removing it.

Vent hose? We were only kidding.....
Actually, the vent hose is a pre-formed hose (1/4"? 5/16"?) that has a j-shaped bend in it. The bent portion should be near the top front of your cam cover as the bend lets the hose clear the rubber mount on the right side of the frame that the fuel tank slides over. The rest of the hose follows the spine of the bike and exits beneath the bike near the other hoses from the airbox. There is a one-way check valve in it at the rear of the frame between/behind the carbs.
The end of the J slides over a small tube protruding from under the center of the tank.

After all is loose, tell her to tighten up. Really, take a towel and do this so that when you lift the front of the tank to get at the you don't scratch anything.
