I've got 5/64 (2 mm) front & 9/64 (3.5 mm) rear tread depth on my Bridgestones @ ~11,000 miles. The Haynes manual seems a little washy on the subject of tread depth - saying something about UK law, typical riding habits, etc.
I haven't been able to find any info on what the original tread depth of either tire was, so I don't have a good gauge on how many more miles I might get out of them.
Is it time to replace either/both for safety concerns or would it just be a good excuse to upgrade a little early?

You've done pretty well to get that out of the stock tires, and you may be able to get a lot of miles out of them yet. But getting a good set will make your bike seem like a whole new animal. I replaced mine at 8,000 miles with lots of tread left on them and never regretted it.

Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

No mistake Bill, you don't know....
Metzler or Avon are the top choices.

FYI under Australian law you need minimum 1.5mm tread depth to be legal - you should find out what your local law says.
From my experience you get roughly 1.5 - 2 front tyres for each rear one so I'd be looking at replacing the front now - probably with a metzler or avon (I've recently put a michelin on the front and found it cheaper and just as good as the metzler) then do the rear when it gets down to about 2mm tread depth. This gets value out of your tyres and keeps you on the safe side of legal. It also means you're not running in two slippery new tyres at the same time.
