When I first moved here, there was an old timey plaster sided gas station/cafe', the kind with the covered pumps, in the eastern part of the county. I was going to refurbish it, call it the blue note, complete with a blue note neon sign and bring in headliners for the "middle of nowhere tour". EC, BB King, Buddy Guy etc. They could do benefit sets for us musically undernourished sorts. Idea never panned out, but it was a great idea .

So where did Eric Clapton play? Victoria?

I have only seen Clapton once so far, at the Cream Reunion 2005 at MSG in NY.
All I can say is "wow".

Did he have robert Randolf's band backing him? I read somewhere that having him as a backing band has really give clapton a kick in the pants, making him play better than ever (in his own words).

I don't necessarily agree 100% but here it is anyway...

What do Eric Clapton and a cup of coffee have in common?

They both suck without Cream!

Freedom ,great idea .shares to be offered to b.a.com members first . he played at gm (yes that gm) place in vancouver ,its a hockey rink apparently .
Speedmaster05, WOW, you got that right,he did a couple of cream numbers ,even without jack and ginger, WOW.
Benny ,the backing band was the robert cray band an old mate of ec, man he was awesome too, he came on stage for the last couple of songs with ec, three amazing guitarists on stage at one time ,the 3rd being doyle bramhall (band member) excellent player (plays a lefty guitar with the strings set for a righty/upside down ) incredible sound .
Saltatrix, you blasphema(sp)a stoning for you(no, not that kind of stoning, the monty python/life of brian kind, you know with women in beards ,packets of gravel etc. )he is god after all.

I don't know about where you are but if you called it Blue Note it would become a gay bar!! In this area if it is a Blue anything it's a gay place. Except 1 very nice resturant in Delaware Water Gap ironicly called the Blue Note. I think it went out of business though.

Blue note is a record label too, more of a jazz thing. Just cause the Blue Oyster Bar in Police Academy was a gay bar doesn't mean they all are!

I know that but there were a few around here blue this and blue that. I don't know if it's a good thing or bad but they are gone now. If the gays went with them (unlikely) it's a good thing if they simply migrated to straight places bad thing.

I saw the Yardbirds play in Denver when I was 14 or 15. Man, how long ago was that? I just remember the guitar player was really good. I didn't know who he was at that time.

Eric is a god, not the god. There are many guitar gods, much like in Greek mythology. Hendrix?, most rock historians agree that Eric was jealous & intimidated by his skills, Eric said so at the time. that's probably why Cream happened, Eric wanted to prove something. Stevie Ray? Hell there are most likely people who would put them all to shame only they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I love them all, they do what I can't.

I've always liked Clapton's playing but lost a lot of respect for him after a friend of mine played me a song off Disraeli gears (I think it was SWLABR but it was 20 years ago)and then played an Otis Rush song from the late fifties immediately after it. Eric had stolen each and every guitar lick from that song to a tee! My friend was particularly crushed because he had styled his own playing after Clapton's. Turned out for the best because he soon discovered the likes of Muddy Waters, BB, Albert, Otis, Son House, Robert Johnson, etc. etc.

Clapton probably wouldn't even make my top 10 guitarist list anymore (though I hear he's a lot better now that he's sober--saw him perform a couple of times in the 80's and he was lackluster at best). But if anyone's interested (a good thread topic maybe?) my top 5 would be:

Jimi Hendrix
Frank Zappa
Jeff Beck
Alan Holdsworth
John McLaughlin

While I like Jimi it always sounded to me like he was banging on it with a hammer. mine would be David Gilmore , Eric Clapton , Johnny Lang (maybe the best he is a kid jury still out) , Stevie Ray Vahun (spelling?) , Pete Townsend and I agree they do what I can't (very well) LOL

I really like all the guys you mentioned too. I think my top 5 is as such because those guys really went where few else dared to go. They could all solo for 15 minutes and stay concentrated throughout. Their improvs rarely degenerated into mere noodling (a la Jerry Garcia or Trey Anastassio). I really miss Stevie Ray--had the pleasure to see him perform several times, twice in real intimate settings at the beginning of his career. Townsend is pretty awesome for what he did. He basically became the rhythm section while Moon and Entwistle went off and did their thing. Hmmmmm? makes me want to reach for the headphones and cue up Live at Leeds!

If you liked Stevie you would like Johnny Lang he is absolutely amazing. I am a dead fan though I liked Jerry but honestly far from being the best or one of the greats. The Dead as a whole was one of the greats though. Gilmore went where noone else did and never degenerated. frank Zappa I liked but wouldn't put him in the one of the greats catagory either. Its all a matter of persepective I think and you can ask 10 guys and get 10 different lists. I feel its what they did as a whole that makes them great and I'm not limiting that statement to any list but to the era..

All the folks mentioned above are great. Eric to me at least seems to have played better for the last ten years than ever. When the man's got a jaming band behind him he can do no wrong. He seems to me a least, at his best playing other folks music and jaming with other guitar slingers. As far as stealing other folks licks. There hasn't been a lick than has not been hit before by someone in many many moons. There are only so many notes you know. Its just in how you string them together.

Interesting how Clapton said he had to really get his chops back when he was preparing for the Cream reunion. I take that as he was slacking off for a great many years, just playing bits of songs and letting his band and friends carry much of the weight.

EC truly is a great guitarist, but not nearly the best.

Exactly my point! Eric strung em' together just like Otis did, even in the same order as the original song!

There is a big difference between stringing similar licks together and these rappers that "sample" I agee on the point you guys are making just figured I would point that out too.

The best part about music is that you can ask 10 people and get 10 different answers. If we all agreed, it would be a short boring conversation

As for sharing lics, that's a blues/jazz thing. Those guys always shared. Check out the real book. Or when people talk about "standards". These are songs someone wrote, but have been played so many times by so many people they are just sorta pulbic domain. The blues guys aren't worried so much about who wrote what, they want to play!

Back when I worked for Johnny Winter, one of my buddies says
to me "Tell Johnny I was stealing a bunch of his licks last night".
When I tell Johnny, he says "That's OK, I just stole 'em from
someone else!".

Works of any kind become part of the public domain, because they pre-date copyright laws, they were never copyrighted in the first place, or their copyright has expired. Unfortunately, a lot of early, seminal musicians never copyrighted anything and have been getting shafted ever since.

The sheer thought of trying to come up with the ten best axe players is mind bogerling. Where do you start. Ive come up with dozens of players who i think are out of this world just while reading the last 10 posts.

Here are just a few of my favorites, and in no particular order.

Dave Gilmore, Snowy White, Andy Fairweatherlow, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Bernie Marsden, Micky Moody, Tony ? (Black Sabbath), Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Steve Ray V, Robert Cray, BB King, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, Ace Frehley, Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, ...the list goes on and on.

The blind guy from Canada, (cant remember his name). And what about the guitar player who played with Bob Marley, Junior Marvin i think his name was.

Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham, the guy from Journey, the guys from Deff Leppard, very good axe players. What criterier do you use to pick the "Best" players. Players who can play a thousand notes a minute or players who have inspired other people to run out a buy a guitar.

This is to difficult. Every time i think of a guitar player to add to the list another name or band pops into my head. Do you only pick players who have done incredible solos or players who have come up with some killer guitar riffs.

Mark Knopler, Slash, Fast Eddie Clark, Paul Stanley, the guys from the House Band on tvs "Rock Star" program.

And think of the dozens and dozens of session men who rarley get a mention. AND AND, for every player who has made it big and become a legendary named guitar player, there are thousands of really brilliant players who have never made it any futher then playing in the bedrooms.

I can think of two unknowns that i have known or seen personally that have never seen the light of day.

Saw a guy playing on Beele Street (literally) on the street, in Memphis. This guy looked like he was in his 70's and looked like he had lived his entire life on the streets. But he had this beaten up old 'OLD' Fender Strat and man he could make that thing sing. I sat on the kerb and listened to him for what seemed like ages.

A friend of mine back in Englad was in my mind a genius guitar player. Never made the light of day. Every time he would join some band that was about to break through something would happen and the band would fold. After Thin Lizzy broke up Phil Lynott started a new band, my mate joined and then shortly after that Phil died. This guy just never got a break.

The world is full of starving musians, and many of them could blow a lot of these so called superstars of any stage.

But for what its worth. If i had to pick my favorite, it would have to be...................

Nigel Tuffnell.

Tony ? from Sabbath was Tony Iomi again not sure on the spelling. and I agree you could go on and on and on with great guitbox players and each in thier own right are the best. What about Eddie VanHalen ..he used to play with his back turned so others couldn't figure out what he was doing.
