Checked my speed o meter today with a vehicle I was sure of accuracy. Seems its excatly ten miles off at 55. And all this time I thought I was really burning up the road. I may not have actually hit the ton yet. Seems they could do a little better with calibration than this.

trash, I've heard a lot of people say 5mph off, but 10 would be unacceptable to me (don't like 5 much either). Might want to have a talk with the dealer about getting the speedo recalibrated/replaced...

Yeah, on the highway I take to work I just thought that everybody drove low 80's instead of low-mid 70's on day's that I took my bike.

Mine tracks very well, exactly 10 MPH over true speed from around 40 to as fast as I have gone on it. Below 40, it seems to get closer to real speed as I slow down because it goes to zero just as I stop.

Ed, Mine goes to zero when I stop, too. I hope there isn't something wrong. Just in case I'm going to try to keep her moving...

Yeah clocked mine against my GF's Xterra and I'm about 10 low also. But that's much easier on the fly math... so I'm cool with it. Mine is somewhat due to my somewhat smaller Avon too..

Trouble is, since it reads +10 the rest of the time, I'm never sure if I'm really stopped or coasting backward at 10MPH.

According to my GPS my speedo is showing about 5MPH over actual at 60 and hardly any error below 40. I've found that the GPS is very close to real speed. My bike isn't very comfortable over 65 anyway. The Windshield seems to cause a little shake above 65.

Mine is rock solid beyond 100, but I don't have a windshield. You might be able to improve it a bit by adjusting the angle of the windshield or changing the tire pressure a little. The air and mechanical dynamics of these things can be realy strange. If you like having a windshield, but really would like to go a little faster, you would do well to consider a frame mounted setup so it won't try so hard to steer the bike for you.

Pipedr,
I just went out to the garage to check mine, as you guys peaked my curiosity. It's reading exactly zero ~ spot on! When I arrived at the grocery store parking lot earlier this evening it was reading zero there as well. If it's off, at least it's consistent????

Back on 4/11/05, in a thread entitled "Speedo Error", by BigTC, I posted this reply: Quote:
Older speedos had an adjustable connecting point for the needle return spring. Just move that till you get a proper reading.
Of course, the hard part is getting the speedo head apart. There is a gauge rebuilding company on the west coast, which does older Triumph speedos and tachs. They might be able to help with this.
If a guy had an "old" speedo to play with, I'll be he could determine where to drill an access hole so he could get at the needle return spring anchor. Then, using a dental pick or o-ring pick, move that anchor point to give a proper reading.
To finish, install a small, black rubber plug in the just-drilled hole.
Do older Triumph models use somewhat the same speedo? A fellow in a "big city", where there's bound to be a motorcycle junkyard, could get one to play with. Once he figured it out, he could do this mod for others (and maybe do ignition box rev limiter mods, too).
Greybeard, Dinqua, Grump, Sal Maglie, Arsenalfan, I hear destiny calling one of you....
