Can someone give me the dimensions of this device. I would like to make one. I have 9600 mi. on the bike and will need it soon. I have someone who will grind one for me if I can get the right dimensions. Thanks, Scott

Here goes, but I have to warn you, my measuring instruments aren't what I would call the highest quality so I make no claims of 100% accuracy. And as you can see, I'm not a draftsman or an engineer. If you make one based on this drawing, I'd sure like to know if it works.

All dimensions are in inches. The distance between the retaining pins(2.16") is center to center as best as I could measure.

Here's the measurements I made of my Triumph backlash retaining pins:

Of course all you really need is the 'business' end (the stepped end).

You gotta love this forum, ask and you shall receive!
Thanks Sal and Jay for the information. Both look good. Now I'll have to decide which to try and get made. Thanks, Scott
P.S. Maybe these could get posted in the Tech.Vault. ! Others might like to have the dimensions.

Both mine and Jay's drawings are what actually come in the kit when you buy the Triumph tool. There's the spanner, which allows you to rotate the sprung gear, and the 2 of the L shaped tools to pin the gear under tension.

Yup, yer right! Answers on demand! Great stuff!
Here's a picture of the pins in action:

Good luck, and be patient doing the backlash check/adjust.
Lots of good advice available here!

You don't need the wrench-like tool when doing valves unless you forget to insert pins before pulling cams.

You machinists out there will probably cringe when you read this, but here's how I just made my retaining pins using a dremel tool and cordless drill.

Basically:
1. Use cutoff-wheel on dremel tool to cut two straight pieces from the long side of an allen wrench. The wrench was should obviously be bigger than the bigger-sized holes in the gears (sorry don't know what actual size I used was).
2. Put the first piece in drill chuck - it holds an allen wrench real nice!
3. Hold the trigger down on the drill or lock it in place, and file away what you want w/ the cutoff wheel on the dremel.
4. Repeat w/ other piece.

If I was going to do it again, I'd probably use a non-rusty allen wrench as stock since it would turn smoother. Oh, and it helps to make sure the dremel tool and drill are turning in opposite directions. Here are some pics.

End Result:

Po' Man's Lathe:

Anyway this only took me about 30 minutes, and sure beats waiting for the part when I have 6 shims to mic.
