I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I own a 2002 Triumph Bonneville America. I was hit by a Dodge truck last Tuesday. There are no Authorized Triumph dealers in the state of Louisiana where I live and my bike is totaled. The help I need from you guys is an online estimate from an authorized Triumph dealership emailed to me of how much my bike is worth with all the performance mods and dress up parts I've put on the bike and a second opinion of my bike being totaled along with a repair estimate. My insurance company wants me to describe the damages so they get a professional opinion. I have also included a link to pictures of my bike before the accident. I managed to keep the bike up and drove it into a field after having my leg and ankle crushed by the truck but it doesn't seem to have done much good besides me not getting hurt any worse than I was. There was an angel on my shoulder that day. 2002 Triumph Bonneville America with only 3850 miles purchased used last March with only 2500 miles on it for $5500 + I put over $1500 into the bike. Damages - All damages on right side of bike. Front wheel squeaks Exhaust head crushed and pulled out of engine Oil cooler busted Right foot peg and rear brake control bent along with the foot control bar Front part of frame twisted slightly and tabs holding the foot control bar bent Right Sceptre exhaust with less than 500 miles on them creased on right side and pushed in towards rear sprocket Right side exhaust is yellowed before the crease and no oil leads me to believe there is internal engine damage Right shock was pushed against the rear swingarm Right tail light bent Scratched chrome This is all I noticed with a broken ankle. There could be more damages that I haven't seen or can't see. Here is a list of most of the dress up parts and performance mods I put on the bike. If I missed any they are in the picture. Sceptre Exhaust System - $620 Stainless Air Injection Removal Kit - $25 Span Adjustable Brake Lever - $20 Solo Finishers - $100 Control module Dress Up Kit - $10 Custom Stainless Cable Retainer - $25 Custom Stainless Fender Bib - $80 Chrome Chain Guard - $70 Chrome Sprocket Cover - $125 Chrome Battery Box Cover - $80 Chrome Risers - ? Chrome Drag Bars - ? Custom Front Turn Signal Bracket - ? Stainless Steel Bolts/Washers/Nuts - over $100 Chrome Engine Mount - $50 Kuryakyn ISO Grips - $53 Pics of my bike before the accident - http://www.ddbentertainment.com/pics/ddbbike.jpgThank you, Everett McBride Jr ddbentertainment@hotmail.com

Glad you weren't hurt any worse. How long before you're riding again? If you have to do this over the phone or by mail, may help to have part numbers from Bike Bandit. You'd have to call a Triumph dealer for labor charges, though.

All I need is a quote saying the bike is not repairable or a quote with parts and labor charges that exceed the bike's worth emailed to me so I can fax it to my insurance company. I'd like to get $7000 out of this mess for my bike. $6500 at the very least.

I won't be riding for a while. If I saw the truck that would be one thing and I'd probably go ride after my ankle heals. Not seeing the truck has put a little fear in me. I'd like to get an on/offroad bike so I can stay off the main roads.
Thanx, -ddb

I think not seeing that truck will help you see future trucks. Good luck. BTW, what part of Louisiana?

You might want to play this close to the vest for now - it could be the best settlement may be lower than $6,000, when you figure in the depreciation of the after market parts.
It could turn out to be that your best possible scenario is to take a cash settlement and then repair the bike yourself, even if you don't intend to keep the bike.
Forgive me if I'm steppin' a little too far here, but, to supply a falsified repair quote is considered in most if not all states as felony insurance fraud. I'm not holier than thou, just letting you know.

Sounds totaled. I would second the hold off saying anything to the other company, they are trying to get off as cheap as possible. Go through your own insurance company, they are working for you and not the guy who hit you. Have an appraiser look at the bike, they can forward a list to a triumph dealer in another state etc.

no no no... I am not looking for a falsified repair quote by any means. I've been around bikes since I was 5 and I've learned a few things about bikes. I know the cost of repairing my bike at an Authorized repair shop will exceed the value of the bike. I just need a quote stating that.

Please don't stop riding. I have been riding since I was 13 years old (34 now). I was in a skid for 15 ft before I layed down. It took about $2500 to repair my bike. But it took weeks to get back on. Don't let it destroy your love for the road.

I don't know if we can do a long distance estimate on the bike, but I'll check in the morning when I get to the shop.
Best I can do is write up what you have describes with the part numbers, and estimate labor.
Pictures are worth a thousand words. If you could hit me with some good detailed pics of all the damaged areas, I could be much more accurate.

Glad to know you're still here to tell us about it. The only dealers I know of near you is Jackson, MS and Houston. Don't forget it is a 100th anniversary edition, that'll add the "collector's item" value to it.
Ride Safe,
Dennis

lol, that's the only two I know of too. There use to be an Authorized Triumph dealer nearby but he had to close shop. Everyone in this state loves their Harleys...

Got ya covered dude, just give me a little time to work up a quote. If you insurance company needs info on me, just let me know. I do all the estimates on Triumph at out dealership.
EDIT: For me to do an official estimate at the shop, they would surely charge you at least 1 hour, if they will get involved (75.oo)
What I can do right now is an unofficial estimate with fairly accurate pricing.

How's this. Now, bare in mind, without looking at the bike in person, I have to go worst case on some of the stuff. Take the head pipe for instance. If it's torn from the head, there could be damage to the head, but I didn't write that up. I did right up both head pipes because, if one is pulled away from the head, odds are it also bent the cross over pipe on the other side. Again, if it has to be from my shop, let me know, and I'll talk to the service manager in the morning. Pete

Everett, Hate to burst your bubble, but here's whats gonna happen. Adjusted Avg retail(as of 6/06) $4,415 Custom parts and equipment $1,000 Actual cash value $5,415 Minus deductible??? $ 250 Total cash settlement $5,165
Unless you have different custom parts coverage(standard is $1000) and what ever your deductible is, that is what you will get. Of course if you want to buy back the bike subtract another 20%. Now you know how I know..... ModelMaker

PRICING Low Retail Average Retail Base Price $3,180 $4,180 Options Exhaust-High Performance (Street) $103 $137 TOTAL PRICE $3,283 $4,317 NADA numbers above is what they will probably come up with.
The 5,500 you paid last March looks like a fair number for a year ago. Now it is starting to bottom out as a 5 year old bike. The custom parts do not increase the value of the bike by his own carrier. As a matter of fact many policies have an exclusion for the custom parts indicating they only owe OEM.
Work the bodily injury claim, when its over get a new bike. Your broken ankle is worth a whole lot more than the bike if you play that one right. You need a limp, lost work, and lots of medical visits.

Doesn't mileage have anything to do with the value of my bike? Only 3850 miles on it.

I've already had 2 ambulance chasers get my info and contact me to see if I wanted their legal services. I was forced to retire from my job last year and was collecting unemployment while looking for a new job and now the accident disqualifies me for unemployment. So for the first time in a long time I can't even pay my bills. I can't drive or walk. My father tells me everything happens for a reason and things always work out in the end. I hope and pray he is right.

Each year we renew physical damage coverage on trucks and trailers. We have the option and requirement of where to set the the levels of coverage. The more coverage, the more it costs. The insurance agents never know the value of any equipment at renewal time, so finding the sweet spot is up to the insured.
Funny how they can figure out the vehicle values in a matter of minutes if there is a claim. If you under insure, too bad. If you over insure, tough luck, it's only worth $X.

Well my insurance company State Farm settled for $3942.52 total loss and that was after a lot of negotiating. Or I could have kept it and received $2947.75. Sucks... They don't cover aftermarket dress up parts so they are coming off. I have a lot of nice chrome available. Oh yeah, State Farm also does not cover medical expenses on motorcyclists. So since the accident report shows the accident to by my fault I got screwed. The accident report is screwed itself. The officer stated my headlight was not on even though all my lights were on when I got off the bike; my blinker was even still on! And she wrote I had a broken right rear paddler. Wonder how much those cost... -ddb

that kinda difficult as our bikes do not have an off switch for the headlight.

FYI to all people who customize (add anything none factory) their bike. When you are doing you insurance and the agent asks if the bike has special equipment.Say Yes, and give a value so it can be added to the coverage for an event like this. Progressive and a couple of companies included the first 1000, but after that you have to add it on. And if you know a harely owner, screaming eagle stuff is owner added according to the insurance industry. So anyway glad it kinda worked out for ya.

Well the insurance company had a contracted tow truck company pick up my totaled bike today. It was weird... I've lost cars and bikes before but this time it really hurt. It feels like I lost a pet. I almost shed a tear when it was being raised onto the tow truck bed. ****** I am going to miss that Triumph. -ddb

ddb, I feel your pain (literally). When they totaled Bonnie I just put her in the back of the garage while I healed up and even after I got moving around it sat there for a couple months. Can't explain why I let things just sit for so long. Then one day I just pulled up my boot straps and got on with it. You will also in time. Good Luck... ModelMaker
