I purchased my 2002 Bonneville America used with 2500 miles on it March of last year. Customized it, put some performance mods on it, about 1200 miles, and gave her a lot of my time. Now she is gone... Last Tuesday afternoon around 4:40pm I was going for a ride on my custom Triumph. It sure was nice... Anyways... I was coming out of a gas station driveway near an intersection a 1/4 mile from my house. The light at the intersection was red on this 4 lane road. The cars were stopped at the red light and 2 cars had stopped before the driveway to let me through. They waved me on so I slowly went past the two cars to take a left on the road. I looked to my right and saw nothing coming so I took off. Next thing I know my leg is crushed and my bike was pushed sideways. Somehow I managed to keep the bike up and drive it into the field on the side of the road. I parked my bike only to see oil spewing out of my engine, my exhaust crushed, the exhaust head pulled out of the engine, and my frame is bent. I looked at my leg and it was all lumpy but I must have been in shock because I was walking on it. A volunteer fireman persuaded me to sit on the tailgate of his truck and wait for the paramedics. I refused going to the hospital because at the time my leg wasn't really bothering me. I shook the hand of the guy that hit me and thanked him for not running me over. After the police report was taken I actually pushed my bike home. I then took a shower and collapsed. My leg is f**ked. So my fiancé drives me to the emergency room they take me right in do x-rays and come to find out my ankle has a hairline fracture. The doctor couldn't really see my leg bone because of the massive contusions. It may have a hairline fracture also but I have to wait for the swelling to go down. I have a foot brace on at the moment and can't walk. This sucks but I thank God that all I have is a busted bike and a busted leg. It could have been so much worse. There was definitely an angel on my shoulder helping me keep that bike up and not laying it down to get run over. I am thankful to be alive. -ddb

Damm, that sucks. We're plenty vulnerable out there.Glad you're not hurt worse than you are, the bike can be fixed. You may get some input from RobBA05 on that broken ankle thing , not something to mess with so take care of it.

I am glad you are ok!! Take it from someone with some serious hardware in their leg. Stay off it till it's better, then work the heck out of it with PT. It works.

Thanks man. What really scares me is I didn't see anything coming. The road was totally clear on that side. I sure didn't see that Gray Dodge Dakota. I didn't get ticketed but I really don't know what happened or who is at fault. I'll find out this Tuesday when I get the police report. My first broken bone. Well I've cracked some ribs before but that has nothing on my ankle. My fiancé yells at me when I go outside with only one crutch. I tell her I can't hold my soda and smoke with 2 crutches! I am about to duct tape a cup holder on a crutch. My leg is swollen worse than it was the day after the accident and is yellow. My foot is all purple. Looks like I’ll be going to see my doc as soon as I figure out who is paying him. I never had an accident on a road bike before.

I try to stay off of it as much as possible. I purchased a good foot brace to replace the crappy one I was given at the hospital that was digging into my leg.

Yeah it does. Someone was definitely looking out for me. I feel so stupid for not wearing boots on my bike. I always wore leather low cut Nikes. Not the best way to protect one's ankle.

Just wanted to thank all you guys. If the insurance company totals my bike and lets me keep it I'll have plenty of nice parts up for sale. My poor Sceptres.... The right one has a nice little crease in it with less than 500 miles on them. I don't see how my leg didn't get crushed worse than it is. The driver of the truck smashed the exhaust head out of the engine and the damage went all the to my right Sceptre pipe.
I didn't even get a chance to put my Nautilus air horn on the bike or the new stock mirrors I purchased off a fellow forum member.
But I am alive and happy to be. Be careful out there guys and gals.

I HATE hearin' this sort o' thing...but I LOVE hearin' that when this sort of things happens, the guy this stuff happens to ends up relatively well enough to PERSONALLY relay all the grisly details to us.
In other words...this does indeed suck, but you sound like a guy who'll be back on that(or I guess another) "horse" real soon...AND better than ever.

Glad to hear you are pretty much OK, I was the proud recepient of TWO severly broken ankles last year thanks to an unliscenced driver who ignored a redlight. I wasn't wearing a helmat and got slammed pretty good, so our angels were working ovetime. Be vigilant with your injury and good luck getting your bike replced/ fixed.

So what happened? Where did the guy come from that you did'nt see him? If you looked to the right, and it was clear, where did he come from, more details please, so I can apply what happened and what NOT to do.....Thank goodness you are alright, I would be devastated if something happened to one of my bikes...Don't be afraid to get another bike...80% of the time I'm on mine, I feel safe, the rest of the time, I am at 110%, ready for a crash...so far, I have had no incidents (except a minor fender bender from a rear ender),,,in 13,500 miles of riding her EVERYWHERE.....Get well soon, the Alexander's (b717doc and BAMOM).....

You've earned your Crash Wings. I know the feeling well. I layed mine down before T-boning a lady that ran a red light. I walked away with some road rash and a sore wrist but thats about it. I always say " Ride scared ". People are idiots! I have countless stories about people turning on me, changing lanes into me and tailgating. Glad to hear your ok.

That it happened at all really sucks, but there is a sort of sickish humor to it all, and I hope this helps cheer you up. How often does a biker get to be the one to say, "Honest officer, I didn't see the truck"?

Ouch... no helmet... I learned my lesson early on about helmets in my younger dirt bike days. After so many hits to the head ya kinda want to protect it.

How are your ankles doing?

I am at a loss as to the details. I didn't see anything yet I was hit. The driver didn't see me either. I KNOW he had to have at least heard me. Hopefully the police report will have more info.

Glad to hear you made it through without any severe injuries. With the weather warming up around here, there's been quite a few motorcycle accidents lately with one fatality on Saturday. With spring approaching up north, cagers have gone all winter long not seeing many bikes on the road, so they need to be reconditioned on awareness.

lol, yeah what happened was pretty serious and I've been making jokes about it since it happened. Keeps my spirits up.
Now the nurse at the hospital kinda threw me for a loop. She said "We don't see many of you guys." and I said "What do you mean?" and she said "Most of you guys go straight to the morgue."

Thanks all you guys. If any of you can help me out with an estimate of what my totaled bike is worth (before the crash not after ) Please check out the Estimate thread I started in this folder. All I need is an estimate emailed to me so I can fax it to my insurance company. I'd like to have it in the $7000 range. -ddb

Well, ddb, I spent after about two and half months in a wheelchair over the summer, and physical therapy since then, I'm starting to get back to normal. More importantly, I paid my dealer a deposit to order a 07 Mulberry red SM last week. I got on a bike for the first time during last week's "open house." Wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have an emotional breakdown or anything. It was fine, the first place I drove to was the intersection I got ran over in. I had THE worse case of cottonmouth ever!
I figure getting back in the saddle and SOON is the only way to make sure I always enjoy riding.

ddb, I thank GOD you're still with us. Your bike is a 100th anniversary edition. With all your improvements, it's worth $10K, but if you were going to sell it, it may bring $7500. That's because the people in the market for this type of bike don't know their real value. The accident you had reminds me of what I do when a cager flags me through. I go to neutral, push back with my legs and hold my hands up while shaking my head "no". This situation is an invitation to disaster. The cagers have good intentions, but do not realize our vulnerability. Check with the dealer in Jackson, MS and for sure Houston has a dealership. Again, I'm glad you not dead. Get well now!

Awesome man. I'm sure I'll get a case of the nerves when I get on another bike but you are right. The sooner you are able to get back on the better you'll feel. Man that bike was like motorized valium.

Sorry to hear that, I got hit by a car last october. my legs were fine, it was my wrists that got beat up. Insuramce didn't pay me as much as I thought it was worth, (it was a 94 intruder in great shape, but not worth much according to the insurance agency) Make sure you mark every add on you can. I'll repeat what everybody else said, listten to the doc, get rehab if you can. Glad to hear you are at least ok. Gotta watch out for those trucks, we lose to them everytime! Everybody ride safe and keep the shinny side up.
