You know the hardest part of my job is dealing with idiots from time to time. Today I had Mr Harley. I have a picture of my wife on my bike on the background of my computer. Mr Harley says what a nice little bike do you have a real bike for trips? My response was I don't need one my bike is fine for that too. You cant be serious he says you need something to hold the road like I have. I take a calm breath (as I add a point to his interest rate) And say what do you ride? Mr Harley say a full dresser nothing holds the road like it He then says nothing better for my yearly Sturgis run then my real road bike The little stuff like that one just cant handle it You really need a real bike under you to make a trip like that. Really I say(as I put rustproofing into his payment that he doesn't need). I ask him what year is his bike ?His response was a 2002. I say cool how many miles on her. He says 4700. wow I say how many times you been to Sturgis? 4 years in a row. Something wrong with your Odo I say(as I slip his rate up another point)
Naa I trailer that and my vespa out there every year I use the scooter for around town riding.(I add gap protection for 650 bucks after he says that.) Man I say I really wish I could afford a real bike like you Mr Harley could you sign here please. You know its really a good thing I don't hold a grudge

I'd hate to see you really bear a grudge....

I just liked the vision of a Hardley and a Vespa on a trailer... how opposite can you get...

Chris,
Try not to be too upset. I've done some research and your Harley guy isn't too far off the mark. Studies have show that a trailer, when fully loaded with a Harley is far less subject to wind induced roll-over. So, If anyone is taking a motorcycle trip by trailer, I reccommend the Harley.

Chris,

Great story.

If only you could have keep him talking for a little while longer he could have paid off the national debt.

Since I can't think of many other ways to ride except on a highway or street and a dresser is pretty much unmanageable offroad, I'm beginning to think that most of the miles on his bike were put on by the dealers wrench when it's trailered in for service.

You just have to love people like that. I remember going to a bike show once in February and it was about 40 degrees out. Someone asked this "Harley" guy if he rode his bike to the show. He puffs out his chest and says, "I sure did." I asked, "How far did you ride?" He says, "8 miles." I started laughing. He didn't like that too much and he walked away. I laughed because only two weeks earlier on January 30th I bought a bike and rode it 80 miles in 38 degree weather. I'm not saying I was smart to do it, but these poser's need a frickin' clue about how passionate some of us real riders are about our bikes.

Way to go, Chris.

I have a few like that myself, and all I can do is be polite and tell them how many $$$$ it's going to cost them to fix their old car. They know I ride every day though, and over time, I think their attitudes are changing some. They keep asking me how many miles I have on her NOW?

Greybeard, he must have put that thing on and off of the trailer a LOT to rack up that many miles loading and unloading it to go to get it repaired...

When working in Sioux falls South Dakota last year good acquaintance from the job site asked me if I would give him a ride to the HD dealer to get his new soft tail I agreed. after taking possession of said bike asked if I would tow his new bike trailer to his house. It was a package deal no less I laughed all the way to his house, thinking what a DA. Then remembering I'm towing the fricking trailer.

A few weeks after I bought my Speedmaster last year, a guy I had never seen before came up to me at work and asked me if the new Triumph in the lot was mine (I assume he saw my Triumph jacket hanging in my cube). I said yeah, and he asked all the normal questions.

Then he tells me he has the full-dressed Harley that I've probably seen in the lot (which I don't recall ever seeing). This guy having a full-dressed Harely is kind of odd because I can't imagine that he's even 30 yet.

But anyway, he says he and his family go to Sturgis every year and trailer their bikes. Then he tells me that he normally doesn't even leave their 5th wheel while he's there. Any sign of rain and he retreats to the trailer.

Five minutes later I'm telling the guy across from me, who bought a Sportster a few weeks before me, that he's no longer the biggest biker pansey of the company and recite the entire story. Five minutes after that, I discover that the guy I had never seen before sits two rows away from me and if he was in his cube at the time, probably heard me referring to him as the big biker pansey of the company. lol. He's never really talked to me again, so it's possible he did hear. Although, I did ask him about Sturgis last year and he said it was a good time.

And for the record, I've NEVER seen his Harley at work, even after I started keep an eye out for it.

I sure wish I could be a little more like you Chris. Shall me say..."covertly methodical".

Whenever some blowhard, who doesn't know what the hell he's talkin' about starts pontificating about some issue that he's an "expert" about, THIS blowhard has always found it an irresistable opening to "enlighten" said other blowhard.(I'm sure you've noticed this trait of mine, lo these last few years around here, haven't you?)

I probably would have blown the sale.

april issue of roadbike mag. has a story about a guy who run his 250 rebel from sebring fl. to las vegas and had a really fun time doing it. and then there is me, who run a 1972 Triumph all the way around the perimeter of the U.S. went from Mi. to L.A, to Dallas, to Lauderdale, to Va., to Buffalo, to Mi. all on a little bitty Triumph. and had a great deal of fun doing it hahahahahahahaha Some guy's just think bigger is better hahahaha hence the 2000cc and 2300cc bikes available today. i wouldnt hesitate to run my "little" Triumph anywhere, and that is a bit of the difference, i can take my bike anyplace Mr. h.d. can, but he cant take his everywhere i can hahahahahahahah

Going to Daytona on Friday - after a 5+ year absence.

Last time, we followed Miss America (named for her red/white/blue thong and her propensity for showing her stars at every opportunity) down Main St for about 30 minutes (2 blocks). I think the (wife inflicted) bruises on my right arm have finally healed. "Stop looking!" "I can't, I'm driving." "Look away, I'll tell you when traffic starts moving." "Wait, nevermind, they're naked over there too." "You don't care about the motorcycles." "Now I know why you wanted to come here." "We're never coming down here again!" The l - o - n - g silent ride home.

Maybe it's another sign of old age, but I'm really only hoping to see some Triumphs this year.
