A friend e-mailed me yesterday with pictures from a motorcycle accident in Budapest Hungry. The friend is in the Navy stationed in Italy, and I suspect the pictures are of a fellow service member. The bike didn't look to bad, but the rider hit a light pole at a high rate of speed, which severed his body at the waist. To say the least it wasn't pretty. So speed kills and the results are never pretty as the pictures unfortunately showed.

Ride safe and watch your speed.

Speed doesn't kill - inappropriate speed does.

If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Unfortunately "inappropriate" is a pretty subjective term... But I do agree.

Or....
Speed kills if you are not used to it.

I crashed doing less than the speed limit for the road....

yep I think "inappropriate" is the key word here, of the 3 "memorable" falls I've taken, I'd (and the police agreed)
attribute part of the cause of only one to speed the other factor was sand in a curve.

Other 2 crashes 1 involed pedestian and taxi cab.
2 was young girl pulling out of gas station into my path.

Its not so much the falling as the landing, scraping, sliding and abrupt stopping....

In my own experience, it wasn't the speed but the hurrying.

Speed is intoxicating. It's a huge rush, that's why we do it. Unfortunately, when you get intoxicated, the first thing to be affected is your judgement. It's that bad judgement that kills.

Good point Gerry. If I'm in a rush to get somplace I dont go by bike. If I'm late for work well so what stuff happens.

Yes and the hurrying may not be your fault. This week a 29 year guy that worked at the company I retired from got killed when an A****** in a van cut through a gas station instead of waiting at the light like everyone else because he was late for work and literally ran over this guy killing him instantly.

And now we have a judge on the state appeals court that is throwing out murder convictions if a vehicle is involved because he doesn't think it is appropriate. I will be willing to bet when MADD gets through with him, he no longer has a legal career.

The AMA should go after him too.

Some people really take cars for granted too much and don't appreciate the severity of their situation.

I've had a few, but the most "memorable" was rear ending a stopped mid 60’s Mustang while riding my Honda CB350 back in 1973 and watching a fetching young thing in a very short skirt and halter top rather than the car ahead of me. The car and the bike were both undamaged, but the laughter of the girl and witnesses severely damaged my poor fragile ego.

Riding over your head gets you killed be it 25MPH, or 120. Too many riders get into situations they can't control due to lack of experience, or skill and wind up dead. My goal on the road is to ride as long and accident free as humanly possible. If I can go fast on occasion that's cool, but I never push it to the point of my butt puckering with fear, or doubting my ability to control the bike. Good Lord willing I never will.

Couldn't agree with you more. After 40+ years of riding, including going down three times, I've learned that it is always better to ride well slowly than ride fast poorly.

Had kind of a similar incedent, I was admireing a well shaped behind once and nearly "rear ended" an suv at a stop light. Wouldnt that hvae been a change of pace.My wife yelled "watch it" just in time to snap me back to Earth.
Then said somthing like keep your eyes off the butts and on the road.

Our rider group had a meeting with some local moto officers about safety on Sat. Great turnout and good info-nothing we haven't heard before; speed is the number 1 cause of single vehicle accidents, usually mixed with alcohol-and all the stuff MSF teaches.

I also talked to the officer who worked the accident in the previous post. The SUV driver didn't want to wait at the light so he cut through the service station, the TURNED LEFT into incoming traffic trying to get across the road and ran head on into the motorcycle rider and then over him. The Texas DPS is reconstructing the accident and the officer said the driver will go to prison becuase this was so blatant and he broke numerous laws in order to kill someone-'accident' is not a good word for what happened.

As the saying goes, "Crashing Sucks"! Defensive riding is the key, which goes along with riding at a safe speed based on the conditions. My last good crash was when after riding 80 miles in the mountains, I entered the main roads to transport my bike to my the trailer. (Seems the police don't take kindly to bikes with no turn signals.) While the bike was geared for climbing and not much for speed the lady that pulled in front of me thought I was going slow enough for her to make it across. Wrong! I hit her on the passenger side, flew across the hood of her car and landed on my head on not very forgiving asphault. Thank goodness for helments! This little flight cost me 32 stiches in my leg and a broken back. The bike did not fair very well either. I guess if I had been on a faster bike I would not be here today. I still say the ambulance ride was worse than the flight. The key is defensive, let the other guy be right and rush through the intersections. It's better to be a few seconds later than "dead".

absolutly. I come to every intersection like the person is going to pull out in front of me. I am glad you were OK I too hit a car at about 45 many years ago lucky the way I hit it slowed me down and flung me across the hood. I was completely un injured except a couple small bruises. My bike had damage but wasn't too bad. Was some guy watching an ambulance go up the road instead of watching what was comming and pulled right infront of me. I have driven more caucously ever since.
