To All My Fellow CT. Millionaires,

The honorable Jodi Rell and the CT. legislature have reached a new low; they have driven every profitable business from CT. and now have turned their attention to the rest of us.

Surrounded by my milk and bread yesterday awaiting the pending snow storm I had little else to do but read the Sunday paper editorials.

Lo and Behold with one swift stroke of the pen, the governor and legislature have re-defined what it takes to be a millionaire in the state of CT... Just in case you are not aware and to avoid the PC label CT. is best related to the color related to baby boys.

But first I must digress a bit, after driving the Insurance Industry, Metals Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry & Eyelet and Fasters Industries out of CT. and creating the most hostile business atmosphere anywhere on the North American continent the boys and girls in Hartford are now coming after us.

Facing a budget deficit and the business well has gone dry, they needed a new "revenue enhancement" stream so they decided to come up with a "millionaires tax", but when they looked around and ran the numbers all the real millionaires split along time ago the new revenue stream from this new tax did not add up to much. WHAT TO DO!!! Redefine what it takes to be a millionaire!!!!

So as of this legislative session a

"MILLIONAIRE IN CT. WILL NOW BE ANY INDIVIAUAL MAKING MORE THAN $10.47 PER HOUR. THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS NO MISPRINT THERE $10.47 PER HOUR AND UP AND YOUR A CT. MILLIONAIRE.

Thus subject to the new millionaire tax. With my new found wealth I stopped at the package store on the way home and picked up a bottle of Brandy never drank Brandy before but I understand if you’re a millionaire you drink Brandy. I then stopped at the cigar store and picked up a couple of Monte Crisco torpedoes.

To add insult to injure they have attached an amendment to this bill to give every illegal alien in-state tuition at all public Universities and Colleges in CT... But the rest of us legal residents are just left to our own devices, no help here for our kids.

Now the coup to decra in order to get this passed so that all of us local morons do not burn down the state building they are going to eliminate the personal property tax on automobiles (un-funded mandate). The only problem with that is we do not pay the state personal property tax on autos we pay the cities so they lose that revenue stream and they will be forced to up the mill rate on our homes to pay for the shortfall in revenue (CT. just went through re-valuation).

So I sit here tonight drinking my Brandy and smoking my Monte Crisco like all the other real millionaires and thanking my luck stars for my new found wealth.

John,
If you're a millionaire you should own another home in NH. Heck, just move to NH before they build a wall around CT to keep people from leaving. Next thing you know you'll need a passport to leave CT. Get the hell out of that Socialist Republic of Connecticut. Don't stop in Taxachusettes either.

Heh Heh. Soon I will be leaving CT behind. No more $9000 a year property taxes. No more 17.8 cent per KWH electricity. No more cold. No more putting up with snooty neighbors.

Poppy, it took the Governor to tell you that you're a Millionaire! Geez, I knew that as soon as I crossed the state line and moved into Litchfield County! Why I live only miles from the likes of Conan O'Brian and James Earl Jones, near towns who consider splitting their mandated minimum 5-acre lots down to 1-acre lots so long as they are used for affordable housing (for those non-Yankees out there, that would be a house that costs $285,000, has .23 acres of land that you don't own, but belongs to the town, but that you CAN will to your kids, BUT that you have to make under $60,000 a year to be eligible to buy since it is "AFFORDABLE" housing-you figure out that logic!!), get to pay BY THE BAG to take my trash to the dump, and if I want to be elitist, and rent a small house for my family instead of an apartment complex with no yard, no pets, etc..., can look forward to approx. $1800/month rent plus over $300/mo in electric and oil. Why I'd HAVE to be a millionaire to live here, wouldn't I (or just crazy or a fool, not sure which I am yet)! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the rural hills and valleys of Litchfield County, the winding roads and mountain streams, being close to family, the shore, etc..., but people around here wouldn't know "affordable" if it landed on their faces and farted out money! Poppy, swing by this weekend and we'll fire up a couple Monte Cristos over a snifter of Brandy, and laugh at the poor people, or perhaps admire the new leather on my 1930 Bentley 4-1/2 Liter...
Ciao Dahlings....

Does your governor know our governor? I think they have been trading ideas. Tax everything and everyone to excess and give it away to those that shouldn't be here. At the same time, dictate every thought and and action we have.

At the the end of this year, we (those of us in Oregon) will need to have a passport to fly as the Oregon drivers licence will no longer be considered a valid id (seems we give away too many drivers licences to illegal aliens).

Ya know Kim and I are trying to move north too, and CT and MA would be a really nice in-between for our families. Scariest part is either would still be cheaper than Long Island....

Hey Big Poppy, just got back to CT to read your epistle. No need for me to rub it in about my move to SC March 27. I gladly give up millionaire status but I'll miss having you close by.

So know that you are a millionaire, i take it you will be trading that poor mans bike of yours and buying something that reflects your financial status. An OCC bike or something of that nature.

Do you need me to find you the number of the local Bentley dealer. Jaguars are so middle class

Oh, btw, could you lend me a few thousand.

Who would of thunk it. That a plumber like me could wake up one morning, and read on the net that now I am a millionaire. And I didn't even buy a lotto ticket.
Let see, electric bill up 60.00 this month. lets not even talk about oil. 4000.00 property tax. some of the highest gas prices in the country. ****** I'm glad I'm now a wealthy man. South Carolina is looking better all the time.
Poppy see you at Toymakers when the snow melts.

Hmmmm, I've been second, third and fourth-guessing my move UP from SC ever since I crossed the state line. Maybe I should have held out until something in Colorado came along!!! Funny thing is, I talk to all my relatives (wifes side) around here, or co-workers, and they won't believe me when I say that even Denver is cheaper than Connecticut (believe me, I've been doing SCADS of research on this over the last 2 years, plus talking to relatives in/around Denver!)

I know I Pi** an Moan about the cost of living here, but I forgot I can ride out of my garage to some of the best roads in CT.
Just a couple of hours, and I can be in Vermont or the Lake George region of NY. I leave my driveway in SC, and I'm in downtown Myrtle Beach traffic. Cost of living is lots cheaper down there, weather is great(I like hot weather better than cold) but all the good roads are on the other side of the state.

I wish to thank all the well wishers and fellow CT. Millionaires for their kindest and warmest regards, regarding my new found wealth.

My head seems to bothering me today after drinking all that Brandy I guess being a Millioniare is not all fun and games. I believe it will take some time to get use to our new wealth and status.

The only thing bothering me (besides my head) is what has happened to oneeyedjack. He may not be aware of his new found wealth yet or the shock of it all has finally gotten to him and he decided go live in the uramium mine I sold him awhile back.

Well I off now to look at either a Bentley or Silver Shadow what the hell I'm going to buy both !!!

It's great being a Millionaire !!!!

My favorite example of how CT is intent upon punishing the fools (like me) who set up shop here:

In CT, we have two state taxes on diesel fuel - one is a flat $0.26 per gallon, and the other is around 6% of the gross, called the "Gross Receipts Tax." The GRT is usually around 12 or 14 cents per gallon. Why is this a big deal? Because big trucks, which are the lifeline of the nation's supply chain, get around 5 or 6 MPG. OK, we do need taxes to get along -

Now the WTF? part - EVERY out of state truck passing through CT is exempt from and does not have to pay the 6% of the gross fuel tax. Out of state trucks can both be more competitive in CT, and also pay less than the CT trucks for road upkeep.

The two current hot topics in CT legislature - Not 'how to stop the hemorrhaging of business dollars out of state' but instead, banning elephant hooks before Ringling Bros. comes to town, (I sh** you not) and making grocery stores accept plastic shopping bags back. (The brown plastic bags are made from corn, and are biodegradable anyway.)

We have the distinction of being the only state in the union with a comparative loss in business growth. For example, UPS spent millions to get their HQ & to relocate their management people out of CT, and saved money in the process.

If I wasn't so entrenched here, I'd be long gone. The state 'leaders' are burying us alive.

Bad news for Benny - Kiplingers states that the cost of living in W. Hartford, CT is higher than in NYC.

Yes, but you have 9=10 months to get to the other side of the state, not to mention you can afford the gas to get there.... At least one thing is not better in SC, they have the dreaded property tax on all things fun just like CT...

I bet the cost of living in eastern CT is a lot less
Then again it's a kind of waste land over there... It is amazing how expensive pretty much everywhere in the NE is. Kinda screwed no matter what. Thing is it's not just cost driving us off the island, its other things too, so we'll see.

Tell me about it Benny, I would love to live in a town like Lebanon and be able to commute to work, then I could actually afford that crazy dream of mine to BUY a house instead of renting! A couple friends of my wifes family commute every day from Columbia, CT to Bridgeport and New Haven, but I haven't taken to smoking crack just yet!

Would I risk getting mob slapped if I said I only have to commute five minutes to work? I feel great sympathy for the CT millionaires. (Good thing PA hasn't thought of that yet)
But, don't you feel quite the philanthropist knowing that your millions will put all those unfortunate illigal aliens through college? Will they be getting free healthcare also?
I think the "dumbing of America" finally worked. Our politicians are rapeing the citizens and we as a society are allowing them.
If anyone is interested, my neck of the woods has a very low cost of living. In fact if I remember correctly, its so low the unemployment rate is higher!

Forgot to mention...I'll be living in the "other part of the state." Where all the good roads are. Check out "Upstate SC". I did and that's why I'm moving. And the proximity to excellent riding was a big part of it.

Yeah I am NOT willing to "accept" a huge commute either. I think that is a total waste of time, and my time is worth money, not me SPENDING money on gas, etc. When I moved to NY I literally lived a half mile from work, maybe .6... I could walk there in 11 minutes. My job now sort of includes my time in the car, so whatever... but as I contemplate new surroundings or a new job down here, that weighs on my mind heavily. Especially since the car I will be driving (at first anyway) is a Hyundai with no AC and roll up windows! Gotta go get a trucker fan and a spinner for the wheel

Funny thing about CT I know people who love it, and a few people who want to GTFO. Maybe being a native helps?

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for a people to advance from that subordination in which they have hitherto remained, and to assume among the powers of the earth........

oops sorry I was haveing some fantasy of how to respond to this latest affornt form the evil empire that now controls the capital.

Yeah being a native helps, in that when the state finally manages to drive me into bankruptcy. I will have nearby relitives to mooch off.

Being a native also makes it very difficult to pack up and leave. My 80 yr old Mom, who still works 25 hrs a week to supliment her social security.Gee I hope shes not upset by not making the millionaries list. Kinda keeps me here, My son being deployed to Iraq. Also keeps me kinda rooted.
State may have to build a wall to keep the younger less rooted population, There was a small story on the mews the other day about younger people leaveing the state in droves.

Ah yes Ct the "Tax me" state. One 3rd of my monthly mortgage payment goes to tax escrow. And each year our town council pats its self on the back on how they managed to only raise the mil rate a little bit. Someone already mentioned we are among highest gas tax.Cigagette and liquer taexes in the counrty. And of course who can forget Lowell P. Wieker. Father of the Ct income tax.I recall his campaigne saying all the way no state imcome tax. Then within six months of being elcected saying "gee ya know a state income tax isnt such a bad idea".

Gov Reil (rep) has for a long time been trying to do away with motor vehicle tax. Democrat controlled legisature says no way "that would benifit the rich" (remeber this is America we must punish the rich). Dems have been screaming for Millionaires tax forever. So I guess the great comprimise is to screw everybody.

sorry rant over.

There are articles around here all the time about the younger folks, Gen-X, my age, etc leaving Long Island. I think I'm the only one who moved here!! Silly me... The number of single people living alone down here is REALLY small. Most still live with their parents.

Well, that sort of makes sense. At 10.48/hour, it would only take about 46 years to gross one million. If you save every penny of your net income by walking to work, sleeping under a bridge and eating at the local rescue mission, it would only take you 95 - 100 years to actually accumulate a million.

Of course, politicians see things from a different perspective. A good politician whose office pays, say, 250K/year would be a millionaire in a matter of weeks.

Mike,

They never do, remember Wickers famous line:

"A CT. state income tax would be like pouring gas on a fire" Then he got elected and 6 months later we had a state income tax.

We can screw the Indians instead, but those pesky federal laws got in the way of that idea (sovereign nation status).

CT. bill 176893A sub 3 section 4 sub paragraph 6: establish toll booths on every primary and secondary road leading into and out of the CT. Indian reservation's on State supported roads and by-ways. Before the house this year.

Funny thing about CT I know people who love it, and a few people who want to GTFO. Maybe being a native helps?

There was a small story on the mews the other day about younger people leaveing the state in droves.

Jack, no worries there, Gov. Rell got on TV about 2-3 weeks back at a press conference and flatly said that those statitics were WRONG, and that young people were indeed coming INTO Connecticut!!! Of course, she didn't mention that they were actually just passing through on their way to go skiing in Vermont or New Hampshire, but that's kind of a insignificant little detail to argue over...

I can only talk from my personal perspective. I love/hate Connecticut. I moved here primarily to be closer to family, and initially (until I looked at houses) it seemed possible, since I took at $16,000 pay increase to come here! Yeah, that sounds like a pretty good jump in income, so surely I can make it work. Then reality hit me in the face:
1. A bag of 8 O'clock coffee costs $1 more in the grocery store than in South Carolina.
2. I have to buy a $32 punch card 1-2 times a month, from which they take money off of it for me to dispose of my household garbage.
3. Gas is about 16-30 cents a gallon higher than SC. Actually, the 87 is 16, but in SC, 89 is usually 10 cents a gallon higher, while in wester CT at least, I often find a 30-40 cent per gallon difference. And I can easily find a horde of gas station that will double or triple that 16 cents a gallon difference, even for the 87 octane.
4. My utility bill (full electric heat, and central a/c) was max. about $120 a month in summer/winter, and down to 80 in fall/spring. Here, for a 750sq. ft. cabin, it's $172 for electricity (no major appliances beyond furnace, fridge, water heater and stove), and another $135/month or so for heating oil.
5. If I were to buy my house in SC (3BR/2BA, 1400 sq. ft, 0.6 acre lot), I would pay approx. $118-125,000. To do the same here where I want to live, without a 50 mile commute from the other side of Waterbury (where housing is a little more affordable) or Torrington, I will not touch the same house in the same condition, for under $260-$300,000! Therefore, to live in a nice town, in a nice area, where I WANT to live(not where I can AFFORD to live, which was anywhere except certain parts of Charleston in SC), I will have to rent for at least 2 years, probably more (one guy has been renting here at work for 20 years!), and will most likely not find a house for under $1600/month (double my mortgage, and now I no longer own, but am a tenant!!!).
6. Property tax on that house in SC, $710 a year. Here, between $2500-4000 a year depending on towns. Thankfully, no property tax as a lowly tenant, but then no tax deduction either since I'm no longer a homeowner!
6. My phone service somehow is actually a bit cheaper, but I have faith that this will be corrected soon!
7. Property tax should be a wash, we'll see....
8. License, registration, and plates all cost me less than 40 bucks if I recall right in South Carolina. Here it cost about $230.
9. No matter where I'm driving, unless it's all interstate, it takes approx. 2 minutes for every mile. I commute 25 miles to work, takes 50 min if all goes well (which is why I'm not going to even consider commuting in from the other side of Waterbury.

I've already let my wife know up front that it's a very good possibility that we'll move in 2 years if the housing market doesn't do a major adjustment downward, which is a shame, cause I do love it around here, lots of pretty towns, the hills, valleys and rivers, great riding roads with covered bridges, all that stuff, and snow, which my kids never really got in SC. And, at the same time, while I'm in the foothills of the Litchfield Hills, and just down the road from the Adirondacks, and so on, I'm only 45 minutes-1hour from Long Island Sound and the ocean in the summer (although CT has practically no public beaches, most of the shoreline is actually owned by private homeowners and there are no laws requiring public beach access like back in Florida when I lived there) And the schools so far (here in New Milford) are great. Not that SC was bad, even though it had a bad rating, but my oldest son is mildly Autistic, and there I have come to the conclusion (in SC) that they were just kind of coddling him along, not really challenging him, but here he comes home with homework, and they really seem to work with him to get him to learn. Not to mention, down in SC, we had to buy ALL school supplies, pens, pencils, notebooks, everything. Here, it's all provided by the school like it was when I was little. So big thumbs up so far for education in CT.
Just sucks that you have to have a TV show or be CEO of a large multinational to afford to live here, unless you are a native and bought your house years ago....

(i would not recommend comming there right now place was bought out recently, and the inevitalbe shake up is going on)all the old cronies will be replaced by new cronies over the next few months.

I just mentioned it as an example. oh and btw way Eastern Ct. Is not quite the "waiste land" as someone called it.
