I am being sent to Hawaii to work for five months and I just downloaded the Hawaii rabies quarantine. My old dog may have to be quarantined for 90 to 120 days. And they have to have his blood samples not less than 120 days to arrival. I never get that kind of notice when I have to go to a different job site. He is a old dog and he would die without us! He won't eat or drink when we leave him overnight. I don't know what to do. I am to be there receiving freight on the 2nd of April, not much time to deal with this. I never thought it would be this tough to take him over.

Boomer,

This is what your local Congressman and Senator are for, they should be able to cut through the red tape for you. It is worth a try. There must be someway around this requirement on a humanitarian basis.

I hope things work out for you.

You'd probably have an easier time bringing in c4,
than your dog. Priorities are misplaced.

That's a tough one, I quickly reviewed Hawaii's "rabies free" policy. I'm sure you've checked extended family and any options that way. I'd offer to watch him, being a past owner of two old dogs myself, but my schedule over the summer months is gone a lot. Dogs and people like their routines. Don't know if state vets on the Hawaii end have any room for interpretation, based on your dog's health history.

Good luck,

jh

Don't put the pooch in quarantine unless you're moving there indefinitely. When I lived in Hawaii I worked with someone who regretted putting their dog through that (and a 2 yr. old no less)because they only ended up staying for a year. This was pretty much the consensus, too of just about everyone I spoke to about it. Since the dog is very old, I suspect that he'd be at less risk staying with someone you trust rather than bringing him to the middle of the Pacific to be cared for by strangers. I know you can visit them while in quarantine, but everyone said it was heartbreaking not to be able to take them home.

It's just a way the state government helps the local dog and cat breeders. Like requiring 2 years of training to braid hair or a special degree to be a teacher. Keeping rabies out is certainly an important priority but they know perfectly well that their program is massive overkill. On the other hand, dog breeders vote.

A "special degree" to teach, what a scam! Feed the teachers union please.

To the point, I am sorry for your dilemma, I would have a real difficult time leaving the care of my pets to strangers ( who have no emotional attachment to them ). Best of luck.

I really doubt it. Hawaii is one of a handful of places on Earth that has always been rabies-free. Livestock ranching is a big industry there as is ecotourism. The somewhat draconian policies probably have a lot more to do with the lobbying power of those industries as well as with any altruistic desire to preserve the unique fauna of the islands.

I've been there and asked the state officials to defend the policy. They can't. I had a sailor who wanted to bring his prize winning dog to the islands when he was transferred there and they could give no public health reason for the policy. An Army veterinarian stationed there gave that as his opinion as to why the policy was still in place despite the fact that it is overkill by a factor of about 20. As a practicing politician I have always found that when you want to know why a stupid policy remains in place far beyond any comprehensible reason for it, you should always look for the money.

Rabies is not a public health concern? You're right about the money issue but do you think dog breeders are behind it rather than the Islands' multi-million dollar cattle ranching industry?

That stinks Boomer. I agree with Saltatrix. Do you have a friend or relative that is a dog lover you could leave him with? Since you are only going to be there 5 months hopefully someone could keep him for you. I would be lost w/o Max for 5 months. Hope it works out.

Thanks for the support. Everyone that I think of to look after Tecate either has too many pets or they are gone all the time, so they have none. He is old and his eyesight is fading but is still in very good health. When we ride our horses he will run all day you can just see how happy he is. But he sleeps the next day and I have to give him an aspirin. He is part of the family so I will find a good home for him while were gone. Stress, stress, stress

I wish we were close by. I would give the old guy a nice home while you were gone. Heck, bring him to Chicago and I'll take good care of him.
