How do you take the rear turn signal stems off the indicator? They don't seem to turn.

Undo the lens, open the indicator housing and loosen the nut inside.
(I seem to believe that's what I did anyway...)

I opened the lens, but it seems that the stem screws into the housing of the indicator. No matter how hard I try, it won't turn.

It screws into the bulb "cup' and is locktited in. You can put the stem in a lathe chuck or a vise with aluminum jaws and will be able to un screw the cup.

What Larry said. A little heat won't hurt either. I have some rubber jaw covers for my bench vice, so I put one of those on, and then (with the lense off) I put the cup in the vice with the round part in the rubber, and the flat against the other jaw with a small piece of aluminum angle iron over the jaw. Then I used two nuts on the other end of the stem as a jam nut arrangement, heated the loctite a little, and backed it out.

mine came apart with a little heat, cut the stems in half and used lamp nipples to hold it together. Lamp nipples are one eighth pipe thread [close enough] and don't forget the loctite.
