Rear Brakes for The Speedmaster

Remove the reservoir cap and cover

In order to re-assemble the brake assembly with ease when we are done, we will need to allow the brake hydraulic system to release pressure from the pistons. This is done by removing the cap from the reservoir which allows the system to "breathe". The first thing to do is to place some rags around the rear brake reservoir and then remove the cover. The 8mm bolt just needs to be loosened, not removed. Once it is loose, pull the cover up and out of the way. Then tighten the 8mm bolt back up, taking care that the reservoir is level and will not move.
Next you need to remove the cap to the reservoir. Be careful you don't get any brake fluid on anything, it will remove paint and dis-color chrome. Wipe up anything that spills and be sure nothing gets into the fluid or on the cap. If the level on the reservoir is more than about half full, take an old turkey baster and suck the fluid out until is 1/2 or less full with the cap off. Again, being very careful that you don't allow any brake fluid to get on any painted surfaces. Take the cap and place it wet side up on a rag in a safe location. be sure that nothing can get onto the cover, such as dirt, rags etc.

Notice the color of the brake fluid here, it is bad. It should be much clearer. I will get a bleeder and do this in another section. It can still be used, but you should change your brake fluid every year at least once. hydraulic fluid will break down and mix with air and water and becomes less effective. But, that's another section.
