Man, that adds insult to injury! That "Triumph" wrench cost the original owner of my bike $20 or so if I remember correctly. You can get a oil filter wrench cap at any auto parts store for less than $5.00. Actually the filter is so easy to reach, I just remove mine by hand and a paper towel.

Before we bash Triumph for this one are you sure the filter they gave you is an OEM filter from Triumph and not another brand they cross-referenced? As far as I know Triumph uses only two filters on all of their bikes a cartridge style that fit all of the old T3 engines and the twist-on that has fit all the new bikes designed since '99. A number of different manufacturers make compatible filters for both applications that may not be exactly the same dimension as the OEM part.
BTW, I'm with "jones" on this one. I do mine by hand as well. No reason to gorilla a filter on that tight that's why it has a built in gasket.

Me, I'm a real man, I just twist them on and off by hand. Ar Ar Arr! Seriously though, you can take them off by just stabbing them with a screwdriver and twisting them off. You're gonna throw it away anyway, who cares if it has a big hole in it. And they can be tightened pretty good by hand as well.

I can't imagine you have the wrong one. As far as I know, there is only one twist on model. Maybe Triumph changed suppliers for this filter and the size changed slightly?????

Hi Miniski, I remember reading a while back that Triumph did change the oil filter. Different part numbers and different size. I may have read it on a different website. Yet, given our filter has a vertical orientation and it is where we can gripe it, you can remove it by hand. Or use big channel locks or even, egads, yes a screwdriver. My Nissan Frontier's oil filter has the same base size as Triumph's and Amsoil's oil filters. The loop type oil filter wrench, has a cloth loop on it and it friction fits on the oil filter. Most times you have to get your mind right in order to twist it off by hand! Don't forget to fill your new oil filter with oil before installing! My wife's Concorde's filter is why I have the cloth loop wrench. Tight space and forever a tight filter a real PITA. TriumphRat.Net Discussion

I bought a filter wrench from WalMart that is black (nylon type) plastic and fits over the bottom of the filter perfectly...uses a 3/8 drive socket wrench for leverage. It's made to fit 3 different sizes that appear to be only a few millimeters apart. Cost less than $5. Why risk injury to your beer-twist-off hand when there's a wrench available?

I use a multi-size filter removal tool that fits many ranges and is available in larger sizes. Can be a knuckle buster if you don't know how to use it though. They call them channel locks. Ok I know a little sarcasm there but like Dinqua said, you are only going to throw it away. Nice thing is channel locks come in very handy for a multitude of other uses.

sometimes those filter wrenches look like there's no way they'll fit, but they do. sometimes you have to play w/ the thing. if it's too big, i've used a shop towel to fill the gap on other filters. the old screw driver method works-- kind of messy.
one of my tri filters leaked until i gorilla tightened the sob on there.

I found that pair of Platex Living Gloves work great for an oil filter because of their no slip grip. I don't let anybody see me though.....

Don't let anyone see you? Tell you what. When you see your wife or lady friend using one of those silly lint-sticky-paper-roller things to get dog hairs or lint off of cloth, put on those yellow platex gloves and roll the lint away for her in no time. The only problem is that her gloves are usually way too small. hehe so have her use them.

We use the latex glove trick for dog hair remova. Also works great on your furniture (we have two white dogs). I frequently volunteer to remove dog hair from the wife's pants and shirts, but only in strategic places! <g>

Hi Ed, Go to sears and get a plastic strap wrench. That way size does not matter. They are on sale for $5 quite often. I have even purchased 2 for $5.99 before. Ride Safe , Dennis

With two white dogs in the house, that is pretty much a given- no matter how much we rub each other! <g>

To my knowledge, NO tool should be used to tighten a filter ONTO the bike, as hand tight. The actual spec is 8Nm, which even the least physically fit should be able to handle. If you've got a leak after tightening, it is most likely NOT from being lose, but from dirt on the sealing surface.
