If you are riding a 4-wheeler 40-45mph & hit a ditch it will flip forward, roll you up in a ball & land on you. It really, really hurts.
we should do this every weekend!

JR, I sure hope your OK. Up until about a two years ago, I worked with a guy who managed to run over himself - very similar to your description. He's alive, but he'll never be the same. I live next to a wooded expanse, see these things and the accidents quite frequently. When you see that many brush themselves off and ride away, you sort of lose the respect for the danger. Fact is anytime there's speed connected with anything harder than Jello, someone stands a good chance of getting busted up. Again, hope your OK.

I've been better. It landed down on the grab bar on top of my left leg. It mashed my left calf down to the bone, cracked my sternum & a couple of ribs. Its a good thing I didn't have on a helmet... I would have been going faster. I had to go back to ER because the swelling was cutting off circulation to my leg. It kind of opened my eyes a little bit. I think it might be about time to slow it down a little???

Amen to that! I have had two close friends (1 killed and 1 seriously hurt) on those things. The first guy was out in a field, just putting around checking pregnant cattle, somehow it rolled and his neck was broken in the accident. The other guy, a close (& very experienced) HD riding buddy was spraying weeds going up a steep hill. The top heavy ATV did a sudden back flip and cracked some of his vertebra. He should heal up and be back on his HOG this year.
It appears to me that 4 wheelers are becoming the transport of choice for retirees to run up and down the highway to the post office or grocery store. Sometimes I'll be putting down the highway around here at 60-70 mph and a 4 wheeler will appear in the ditch next to me and start "racing". Gives me the heebie-jeebies.
Now, I'm not anti-ATV as they are great for recreation or useful for work, but you have to respect the laws of physics. Sermon over.

Uh oh, I feel an "excuse" coming up for missing the Georgia rally again. Can't pull the old neuter ploy again now can ya. Gotta come up with a new one.

Yota, My friend had an "adventure" similar to yours. When I asked him how he was doing he said. " Well,I might get better but I'll never get well." kennymc

Yota, you don't have to be going fast to do what ya did. I was going about five mph when an unexpected ditch jumped out of the dark and grabed me. Only broke the left ankle.I managed to push it off of me and rode it straigt into another ditch. I went home after that. A few hours later went to the hospital and got the dreaded news. Yea its broke. Three months later I was good as new. Still hurts sometimes when the weather changes. Having said all that I still own and ride atv's. Sometimes I ride fast, but not quite as much as I used to. But none of my adventures on atv's compare to my adventures on dirt bikes. There was this one night when a bush jumped out in front of me. Glad there weren't camcorders and digital cameras everywhere back then. But have you ever seen a dude still hanging on to the handlebars, feet straight up in the air, head somewhere's down in the bush, waiting for god. I was younger then. Then there was the time another ditch jumped out from behind a blind curve. I don't really like to talk about that one.

Reminds me of a neighbor who found out that only 1 end of a 3 wheeler floats. He was going to follow on of those 6 wheel boat looking things across a creek. Front sank, rear floated, and he went head first into the far bank. He did manage to advance science by proving that, if you start off as a dingbat, banging your head doesn't straighten out your wiring.

LOL...and have you noticed it's not one of those "hurts right away" pains either? It takes your body a few moments to comprehend what just happened, THEN it hurts

I quit riding dirtbikes after I had finally mastered the flying "W" dismount. It took years of practice to perfect the form and to consistently hit that one solitary rock in the ground with either a knee or an elbow. Ah, the memories of rolling around on the ground waiting for enough breath to let out that scream of pain..... Would I do it again? youbetcha! Would I try it now? Not on your life.....
