Going to get rid of the pumpkin turn signals and mount some bullet style signals down on the forks. Would like to go to clear or smoked lenses. Anybody here been hassled by the fuzz or for state inspections regarding turn signal placement or lens color?

Isn't it the light color, not the lens color? Amber LEDs with a clear lens should be fine.

Dont even have to have turn signals on a bike in MIGHTY TEXAS.

Do you have to use hand signals if you don't have turn signals?

That's what my understanding is. What spurred this on is, the clear lensed amber bulbed signals I ordered say "not DOT approved" on the package.

From what I can tell, they're not required in PA either. But I wonder if I replace my factory DOT signals with non DOT signals, if I'm creating any issues.

I can understand your concern Dave, but you already ordered them so might as well put them on and not worry (of course there's always the dreaded insurance friggin' thingy about everything being DOT'ed or we ain't paying).

Hadn't thought about the insurance "thingy". Hmmm.....
Planning to put them on, just need a little more heat in the garage.

It doesn't make sense though for an ins. co. to have a problem with your signals if signals aren't even required in your state. I mean, at least you're running signals vs. not running any at all. Just trying to find the logic.

i have always thought that in 1971 or 2 the feds made it manditory for turn signals i am pretty sure thats when all bikes started comming with them?? and i think it was also at about that time they decided that all bikes should shift on the same side and in the same pattern??

It's a safety issue. There's probably a study somewhere that says motorcycles with turn signals are less likely to get in an accident, whether it's because the other car didn't realize the bike was turning in front of them or because the "type" of person who would ride a bike without turn signals is more likely to engage in other "unsafe" behavior.
It's all about the bean counters and their statistics, man. In their world it's completely logical.

Several years ago I took a motorcycle safety course here in PA. Helmets are not required in PA. According to our instructor, you do not have to wear a helmet, but if you do, it has to be DOT. In other words, you can get a ticket for wearing a non DOT helmet even though helmets are not required.

Sho'nuff.
I believe the reason their not DOT is because there's a min. amount of lens area (size) required by DOT. Like there is for brake lights.
But, I believed in other things that turned out to NOT be true! (like that Easter bunny thing)

In PA state inspection states if a vehicle came with something it has to be in place and work.If your bike is old enough to not have had them new then they are not required but you bike did so they are required. That being said, many places wouldn't enforce that. Also front signals can be clear lens with amber bulb but can not be red. Rear signals can be red or amber.

i am pretty sure thats a fed thing Ian across all states. if a bike didnt come with signals then none are required but if it did then you must have them. and thats what i was saying earlier is that i think it was in the early 70's that it was mandated that all bikes came with signals.???

I am only sure of PA state inspection laws so that was all I stated. It's the same with those stupid TPMS sensors.

My SM is the first bike I ever ran with turn signals, I generally forget to use them.

Probably a good thing there, Ian. Ya see, if you "generally forget to use them", THEN there's a good chance that you'd generally forget to cancel them too, and thus your chances are somewhat diminished that of some cager coming the opposite way at the same time you're nearing an intersection and them making that dreaded left turn right in front of you because you forgot to cancel your turn indicator a mile back down the road.
(...and so, I want you to continue your living in the year 1969 for the time being, as I like you and wouldn't want anything like this above scenario to ever happen to you, ol' buddy!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

No, some are "Recreational Motorcycle Enthusiast", or "Motorcyclists" for short. Some are "Weekend Warriors" (my category) Some are "Poseurs", or P.O.S. for short. And some, like Moe, are actually "Human Motorcycle Parts" that are permanently attached to a motorcycle. Then, of course, there are "Bikers" (I guess?)

saddly I infall into the weekend warrior catagory here too. something about having to work for a living and be a semi resposible human. I am a weekend warrior and a tinkerer but one day I'll get to be a real person. Kieth I know and generally when I make a statment you are excluded because you don't want to be lumped in with generalized statments. I got it. Dwight I wish I had hazard flashers on mine maybe a cager could see that.

I feel better already. Oh and btw... it's 'i' before 'e' except after 'k'.
I think I'll add a set of turn signals on the front to compliment my RIVCO mirror lights. I really don't think they're noticeable enough.

I knew about the "i" before "e" except after "c" thing, but I must have skipped school the day they brought up the "k" think.

If I had my choice I would be gone on mine all the time. I want to tour the country on my bike. When I retire thats my plan.

I have fallen into several of those catagories, but it would be weekend warrior now that I'm working for the man. I used to be a "biker" used to ride around doing collections and everything that went with it.
