As most of you know, I am not a mechanic nor do I play one on TV, so there is some terminology that I am clueless about. I have heard a lot of talk lately about floating rotors. What is the difference between the brakes/rotors that we have and floating rotors/brakes?
Thanx, Soren

If you look at your brake disc, you will see that it is machined from one piece of metal. A floating rotor has a central web that bolts on to the wheel hub and the outer ring that the pads bear on is located on the web by alloy or steel bobbins, thus allowing the ring to "float" in the same plane as the wheel axle, This allows for better contact between the brake pads and the disc so the brake is more effective.

Not exactly a close-up, but you can see on mine that the outer disc is attached to an inner hub kinda. It's secured with what are essentially loose rivets, allowing some side to side play. The rivets have little wave washers in them so the disc doesn't rattle around when the brakes are not applied. Like speedy said, it basically allows some play so when the calipers clamp down, there can be even pressure on both sides. Also prevents warped rotors!

I'm DEFFINATELY getting floating discs. I know Triumph are supposed to continue doing them until the problem is sorted, but I give up! I'm buying EBC's.

Adey, head the rotor bolts before you try to unscrew them. I fubar'd one good!! The good thing is u can see the tip of the bolt coming thru the hub, so heat it from both ends, and maybe an impact driver would be best for it. Those list things are $6 a piece...

Ben,
After you fubar'd that one bolt, what source of heat did you use for the others? Or did you use an air impact driver? Or both. I figured these bolts were gonna be hard to remove. Would you recommend the use of a hand held manual impact driver?

So there are floating rotors available for our bikes that are direct replacements? Do you have to use different calipers too?

Hey Moe (yuck yuck yuck) I used my butane micro torch on the bolts. The good thing is the tip of the bolt is just visible thru the hub, so you can head the head and the shank of it. I didn't have an impact driver at the time, but I think I would have knowing what I know now. I used an allen wrench and I think I eased em out. Shoulda whacked em instead, ya know? But I was so ferrified of fubaring another one... I do have a spare now
