I did a really stuipid thing, I was unloading a lawnmower and went off the back of my flatbed and broke my darn wrist! Have to call an orthopedic surgon on Monday. Had traction today for an hour to straighten it an a special splint put on. The lidocane injected into the fracture was the most painful part of the whole experience. Glad my boss is also my friend, he and his wife drove me to the hospital and waited for me then drove me back. They wanted to take me for my meds and stuff too but told them I could do but thank you. His wife Robin got the comp papers as soon as they got me inside. She even went and got me a wheelchair and Geno pushed me in. My bosses are really great people, they have always been good to me.

Ouch! I know how it feels. Took a fall on the ice & broke my wrist a few years back — serious no fun moment! Glad you have a great boss who was able to help out. Best wishes — hope things heal up good as new!

Do what the docs tell you!!! If they say don't use it for 3 weeks don't use it for 4!! My cousin-in-law broke his wrist and while it was healing, was moving some furniture with the wife and re-injured it. Long story short, he had to get his wrist pinned and now can't move it at all! Now I realize that it could be a totally different break and in a different area on the wrist, but be careful while you're healing Ian, Was it your throttle wrist?

Thank you all for your well wishes and advise. It is my clutch wrist. I plan on trying to do what they tell me, I really want full function back. My injury is more of a crushing injury. pushed the end of the radius in and chipped the end of the other. Doc thinks it will need a plate and screws but will regain function, don't need to fuse anything. I will know better and for sure once the orthopedist looks at it.

Sported a stainless screw in my wrist years ago after a ski accident, without that it never would have healed properly. Like the others said follow the doctors orders that is a very important joint.

therapy yesterday, have a long way to go to get my motion back. When they pulled the bandages there was green ooze! Scared the poop outa me but turned out to be from the scrapes not the wound from surgery. All the wounds looked really good though, no infection. All they really did was make a splint that I am able to remove. I had swelling even with the meds and she put a compression sock on under the splint to help that go down and sent me home with exorcises to do. They are tough, Can't believe how stiff I am, can't even make a full fist. I have been moving all my fingers from the day of surgery and I still lost a lot of range.

It's scary if you've always managed to avoid hospitals etc before this.
( Sorry if that's an assumption on my part).
It often looks/feels worse than it turns out to be...hope that applies to you too.
I hope you're recovery continues to go well. No reason why it shouldn't.
My best wishes to you
Al

That's the worst part! I hear bikes all day and I can't clutch. Too bad I haven't gotten to the hardtail yet, that's gonna be foot clutch jockey shift. Internal throttle cable and hidden electrics with no switches on the bars. But foot clutch jockey shift, I might be able to shift with my forearm.

The last thing you need is to re-injure that wrist before it has substantially healed.

You are absolutely right. I remember my friend broke his leg years ago but kept riding. His bike was kick only and he kicked it with the wrong leg and we rode. No problem but probably not a smart move looking back.

I don't need them so I don't take them, don't want an opioid addiction. I needed them the first night, had to double the first 2 doses it hurt so bad. After that just intermittent mild dull ache. Last couple days really no pain at all, just taking tylenol and ibuprofen every 6 hrs. 500mg and 600mg respectively.

I agree, be very cautious of the pain meds. They can get away from you in a hurry and then it is all bad.

My therapist says I am doing well but progress seems very slow to me. Hard to make a fist and can't bend my wrist back much past a neutral position. I can pull my clutch with some effort but wouldn't want to try and ride far but I could if I had to I think. Pain comes and goes but not to a level of needing any meds for it. I am not sleeping well. I have been able to do small projects in my shop. Converted my press over to air and made a knob for the release so I don't need the handle. I used an antique iron gate valve knob for it. I had to machine a part to go on the press and the other end to accept the knob. I put the front axle back together on the 8N I have been working on. Been trying to keep busy doing what I can with one hand. I put a sterio in the truck I was putting a transmission in before the accident, it does hands free phone, MP3, SD card, CD, USB, and aux jack in a 97 GMC 2500. Kills me I can't finish the transmission yet and I want to pull the bed to clean up the frame before I put the new gas tank in with new fuel lines. I already did all nickle/copper brake lines. I want to clean the frame and under side of the bed to make it last.

The wrist is a very complex joint. It is very easy for someone who is used to doing things, to overdo it. Don't be that guy. Even if you need to let stuff slide for awhile. Really.

Ibuprofen is not only for pain but it helps in reducing swelling too. Is your wrist still swollen? It's a double edge sword and I know that you don't like to take pain meds, neither do I, sometimes you have to to get other benefits from the meds, just take it easy, watch what your doing, don't put ANY stress OR strain on your wrist!!!

The ibuprofen was for the swelling, that is gone now. I stopped taking that a few days ago. The only "swelling" left is from cologen and scar tissue. I massage it to promote blood flow and and stimulate the lymphatic system to make most of that go away eventually.
I have been favoring my wrist, trying not to over do it. I do most things with one hand and my forearm. I have a piece of RR track for an anvil. I have it sitting on my milling machine. I might try and mill the top and sides to flatten them. I know I can't cut and grind the horn right now.

what are you going to use the machine the rail? I would think that a rail would be work hardened to an extreme. Carbide would be a must.

Unless I have misunderstood and the piece of RR track you refer to is a tie!

Yes, it is work hardened and I have a solid carbide end mill I am planning to use. I have to figure out how to secure it though, it's a little too big for my little milling machine. The bottom of it covers the entire bed.

I think you guys got it right. I think I have been over doing it even though I feel like I am being lazy and not doing much. I had my fingers bending pretty well but I seem to be losing some of that mobility after I sleep. I regain it but I wasn't losing it before.

There's a fine line between exercising it, and over working it. Keep it on the exercising side!
