Mopar (short for [MO]tor [PAR]ts) is the automobile parts and service arm of all the DaimlerChrysler American brands that were formerly owned by the Chrysler Corporation. The term was first used by Chrysler in the 1920s and has been in continuous use ever since.


The term has, however, passed into a broader usage among car enthusiasts as an inclusive word for any of Chrysler's brands, but generally any Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Plymouth car and truck. This is because the Chrysler name is confusingly applied both to the parent company and to one of its brands, so if one wanted to refer unambiguously to the parent company, another word was needed. Thus, for example, a car club for owners of any Chrysler Corporation vehicle might describe itself as a club for "Mopar enthusiasts."

The name, Mopar, derived from shorthand for "motor parts." It has been the parts and service division for all of Chrysler's domestic brands since the 1930s. After Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz in the late 1990s, the resulting company--Daimler-Chrysler--kept the Mopar name for all of Chrysler's domestic lines. This sort of parts branding is relatively common in today's market because of the sheer number of brands under single corporate umbrellas.


Mopar Means American Parts
The Chrysler Group is the division of Daimler-Chrysler that oversees the current brands of Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep. In the past, Chrysler also offered the Plymouth brand, the DeSoto brand, and the Imperial brand. Chrysler was, and is more so now, an international car company, but only their American products were given the Mopar name.
