silly question but what part of the engine number is actually the engine number? meaning minus the letters. is it all the numbers after the letters? is there some year month format?

the engines up to a certain number have some slightly different internals than the ones after

haven't heard that before but the first 5 characters of my engine are also in my VIN.

The castings have changed, the starter pin rides in a stronger casting in later models and the breather has changed.

There were a couple of different configurations in the head/ cam chain idler area as well in the earlier productions.
