I'd say it was two things... they were going too fast for the bend that was tighter than they expected, but mainly it's a classic case of object fixation. He could have dropped a cog and given it a touch of rear brake and made that bend, but he was so busy looking at his mate that'd already gone down on the loose gravel that the bike went where he was looking. You can see just before he goes down that he's putting the bike sideways, probably paniced a jumped on the rear brake hard.
Chances are his mate suffered the same thing, too busy worrying about the gravel and fixated on it to the point where he couldn't make the turn.
The thing you most want to stay away from is the thing you'll subconcioulsy point yourself at.

What caused it? Too fast on what looked like a loose surface.
To start with, the riding looked quite controlled but the constant overtaking on long white lines and a couple of solid white lines just showed the power rangers to be like any other weekend warrior - arseholes.
Thinking they owned the road got 'em where they ended up.
Had I been one of the cars overtaken and I'd caught them up while the lay in the ditch, I'd have been tempted to p!ss myself laughing as I drove past 'em!
Do you think I managed to contain my lack of sympathy ??

You're right. Same as mountain biking - look at a rock, you hit the rock!
With motorbikes, the problem is the error happens that little bit quicker!
During rider training we're taught to look where we want to go on such as islands and any bend. Look where you want to go - you go where you look. Feels alien to start with, you're always looking 3 foot infront of the bike.

First, they were in over their heads. Passing on a blind bend is asking for trouble, as is shifting into the oncoming traffic lane to avoid slowing a bit on a bend. At the end, the one wiht the camer was doing just fine untill he saw his mate piled up. When he looked, he went off his line. One of the cardinal rules, if you stare at a crash, you will soon join it.

I am not seeing it that way. The last guy with the camera had a bike mounted camera. He didn't wreck at all. He pulled over and dropped his bike on the right side in his haste to run to his friends.

Good point Ron but don't most guys drop their bike to the left as that is the sidestand side? Forgetting to put the side stand down or not, that's the 'usual' side we get off (because the bike leans that way) so I'd have thought he'd drop it that side.
I dunno, you're right - I'm right .. either way you look at it - those guys were an accident waiting to happen!
Have fun everyone, just park up at the end of the ride - don't watch it being unloaded off a transporter, is all.

Hey Rod, To me, it looks like the camera man's bike got squirrelly right before he hit the "new" unmarked pavement. There appeared to be a bit of gravel dust causing the bike to slip.

Looks to me like bike #2 was down on the left side of the road, bike #3 went into the dirt to the left of bike #2 creating that dust cloud then bike #4 with the camera went down heading for the barrier. Seems like bike #2 just got into some gravel or something. 3 & 4 were just going too fast trying to catch up to them. Hope everyone is ok.

IMO the way they were riding was asking for it. Weaving through traffic, and passing on blind corners, they got what they deserved. I see too many kids around here, on high power sport bikes, driving like they are invinceble. They, for the most part, are inexperienced, and will end up the same way. Charlie

I agree, it's just a shame they hurt others in the process sometimes.

Take a look at the post 155mph + car. That says it all. Too bad for the poor saps in the cage. They probably never knew what hit em. Charlie

Ride your own ride. These guys were trying to "keep up" with, or "catch up to" the two front riders who slipped past some traffic and got away.
They might have been alright had they chosen to ride a little safer and smarter, and not been so worried about their buddies up ahead. They were only seconds behind, and were riding like they were trying to make up minutes.
A responsible group (one that I would want to be riding with anyway) would have stopped eventually to wait for any stragglers, and understood that beng held up in traffic on that kind of a road was just a trait of riding that kind of road.

Target fixation. Just like flying an airplane. You go where you are looking ... Quote:

You just witnessed a few more statistics. Too fast for the road and no brains.
