thanks Frank figured it out, had to remove the bracket to see the hole for bolt. now what size bolt do i need?

No, that would be the size of the spanner required to turn it. As Moe said the bolt's M8x30mm, which happens in most cases to have a 12mm hex head, but could equally have pretty much any other head and still be a M8x30mm bolt.

Yes I gave the wrench sizes needed to turn them . fyi: The pillion bolt comes stock as a M6 x 16mm

When you remove the "lock stud" there is a nut welded to the fender. That nut is a 8mmx1.25 thread (measured it an just bought one). The other nut is the pillion stock size bolt.
