I have seen them what I meant is I didn't think they were going into production for the 09 model year. I thought 2010 was when they were supposed to hit the market.

I agree but that timing cover is unmistakable.I would like to see a more classic styled bike with that engine.

Yep, that's RIGHT!!! That updated Norton has MORE than just a passing resemblance to that older machine, ya know! And just because BOTH of 'em don't have the standard issue seat/rear fender Norton Roadster parts on it, certainly doesn't make it any less "classic styled" there, Ian!!!

Dwight the one you pictured is much closer to a classic Norton than that rice looking thing new for 09. I would never confuse classic vs cruiser and actually kind of resent that implication. The seat line and tank shape certainly do make a difference or did you get the cruiser look vs classic look confused? The bike you pictured would look better to me with the chrome fender that follows the tire too in my opinion. The new Norton looks like any other crotch rocket out of Japan NOT a classic Norton, even the one you pictured.

I think the Thruxton is a better retro cafe racer but Norton was trying something different. Still, the influence is obvious.

In defense of everybody else loving them. I yawned at them in the 70s too. I like cruisers. If you have to ride laying on your tank with your elbows in the air at least buy some HP for 1/2 the price. I figure that is gonna be a $10,000 bike with a $8,000 Norton badge.

But, I guess it was disrespectful to those who like the cafe look.

Ian, you're soooooooo wrong here, I don't know where to begin tellin' ya where exactly you ARE wrong!

So it's (ahem) "japanese lookin'", huh?! Not that there's anything wrong with that BTW, seeing as how you could give me a nice STOCK early Honda CB750 or an early Kawasaki Z1, and I'd GLADLY take it!, however, Ron has it right here...the new Norton has a Cafe Racer look, and I guess I have to remind you Ian that the "Cafe Racer look" was started in Blighty, NOT Japan.

AND, that new Norton motor looks SO MUCH like an old Commando's motor(except that it's cases are horizontally-split, and thus would tend to hold the oil inside it, unlike all old brit iron) that it literally SCREAMS "NORTON"!!!

AND, well...I haven't got all day to tell ya how wrong you are here, so I'll just say once again...THAT FRIGGIN' BIKE IS GORGEOUS!!!!

I have to disagree, it looks more like a Ninja or crotch rocket along those lines to me than any kind of classic cafe' racer. They all share some but to me looks way more Jap than anything else. I don't like it and I don't have to!

I dunno, cafe racers are not a class of bike. They really don't exist anymore other than knockoffs of yesteryear. They were the beginning of the sport bikes.

On the tank, under the wind, rear set controls, fast cranking and easy to lean into curves. Cafe racers were before sport bikes, not an alternative to them. They were the sport bikes. They were the inspiration that was developed over the years into the current sport bikes.

Fast forward 40 years. Why would you have a 85HP almost sport bike that looks like a sport bike. It surely can't compete with a CBR, GSXR, Daytona or the like.

If I have to be uncomfortable riding it, it should at least turn the 1/4 under 11sec. Other than that its form over function.

Now, if you are liking it as a geezer magnet, that is cool. I guess, as ugly bikes go

I that case Ron, I can only assume that you don't care much for the Thruxton either then, right?! It doesn't produce much HP either, and of course it also echos the "cafe racers of yore".

However, here's the deal on bikes such as this, at least in my mind anyway. CBRs, GSXRs, and Daytona and the like are great on the racetrack. They produce all the BHP any decent rider would want or need in that environment. However, I'm of the mind that, first, most riders don't go to track days, and thus any motorcycle over, say, 90 or 100HP and ridden on the streets is a superfluous entity. Torque "is where it's at" for the vast numbers of street rider and how they use there bike. And, Twins usually have that in much higher quantities than do Multis, especially near the bottom of the rev range.

And I'm also of the mind that most riders really can't ride well enough to ulitize high HP machines NO MATTER where they're riding those machines.

And so, the way I figure it, most riders can have much more fun riding the twisties on a say a souped up 75HP Thruxton or this new 85HP Norton, and ulitizing 85 to 95% of its capabilities, than they can on a GSXR litrebike using only maybe 65 to 75% of its potential.

(in other words, as the old saying goes..."It's more fun to go faster on a 'slower' bike, than it is going slower on a 'faster' bike.")

Of the current Triumphs, (I mean bikes sharing the 790/865 engine, the only ones I like), the Thrux ranks dead last.

What strikes me as odd, is the WIDE, WIDE space between the rear shocks.

Must be an allusion?

And seems like a lot of air between the top of the rear tire and the bottom of the tail.

I agree. My Aprilia Mille is pretty much useless unless on a track or when I take it out on some of the twisty Greek highways at dawn when there isn't much traffic around.
Only then can i give it a proper "thrashing" (for medicinal purposes only, of course )

Again I agree, it's much more fun to squeeze the heck out of a bike with say 80-100 bhp than to keep having to hold off on a 130+ bhp bike.

The example that comes to mind was in the late 90's I rode a Laverda 750 Formula (I think it put out 83 horses) on a few occasions (superb handling in the twisties) and it was much more fun than my (at the time) much more powerful Ducati 998.

As an owner of both a Thruxton and an America, I can say the Thruxton will run circles around my America. It's a hoot and you are right I would rather ride a "slow" bike well than a fast bike slow.

On the other hand if I'm going farther than 150 miles I take the America. Love them both.

That thing is gorgeous, especially the John Player colors. I'd find a parking space next to my speedmaster anytime....wouldn't replace the speedie with it though.
